Signs Of Puberty

If parents know what are the signs of puberty, they will be better equipped to handle their kids when they enter puberty. Also, they will be able to talk to their kids about all the changes that their bodies will undergo during this phase of development.

During puberty, the body undergoes many physical, chemical and hormonal changes. This is basically to bring about sexual maturation in a teenager. Also, these changes help a teenager to transition from childhood to adulthood. Usually puberty sets in girls somewhere between 9 years and 14 years of age, while in boys puberty begins between 10 years and 17 years. In girls, puberty will last for around 4 years to 5 years, while in boys, it lasts for around 6 years to 7 years.

There are many physical signs of puberty in boys and girls. Some of them in boys are enlargement in the size of testicles and penis, growth of body hair, rapid increase in height, developing more muscle mass and perspiring more, but the perspiration has an odor. The last signs of puberty in the boys are growth of facial hair and change in the voice.

In girls, the signs of puberty are growth of breasts, getting body hair, growth of vagina and ovaries (this is not visible and takes place internally in the body), beginning of menstruation, the hips and waist become curvy, and the amount of perspiration increases, and also has an odor.

Besides these physical signs of puberty, both boys and girls have emotional changes due to fluctuating levels of hormones. During puberty a teenager can be emotionally volatile and tend to react to the slightest of things, sometimes even without provocation. This emotional outburst can also be the result of stress that the teenager is going through seeing all the physical changes taking place in his or her body.
