Sex Education Disadvantages

Sex education is also referred to as sexuality education and is a type of education that imparts knowledge and helps to form beliefs and attitudes about sex, sexual relationships, sexual intimacy and sexual identity of a child, particularly a teenager.

A sex education class will cover various topics like anatomy of a boy and girl's body, reproduction, sexual intercourse, contraceptives, abstinence, emotional feelings, reproductive health and many other facets of sexual behavior. While sex education is primarily conducted to prevent teenagers from indulging into unsafe and protected sex, it also helps them to protect themselves against being sexually abused or exploited, getting pregnant and acquiringsexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Sex education is usually the responsibility of parents, but many schools across the US have programs devoted to sex education.

While sex education has many advantages, there are also disadvantages linked to it. Here are some sex education disadvantages:

  • Usually in schools, sex education is briefly touched upon and does not give sufficient information or knowledge to teenagers. This is more dangerous than not having any knowledge about sex.
  • Invariably it has been seen that sex education is against a person's moral beliefs and values. So, the education imparted is not effective.
  • Many schools do not give sufficient importance to abstinence. Instead many sex education programs actually pay more attention to teaching teenagers about practicing safe sex methods, something that many parents feel is promoting pre-marital sex.
  • Usually the teachers who impart sex education are not trained to handle these classes. So, they do not know how to go about it correctly. As a result, the teachers also give importance to their moral beliefs and opinions on sex.
  • Many contend that sex education has the opposite effect on teenagers. By imparting knowledge about sex, it makes them curious and this encourages them to explore the realm of sex. Sometimes, due to their curiosity, they can also force another person to indulge into sexual activities.
