Hypomania And Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol addiction is not limited to physical illnesses. It can also cause psychological damage. Alcohol, when consumed in excess proportions, can result in many psychological disorders. Many of these psychological disorders are hard to diagnose, and go unnoticed as a result. In later stages, it can cause devastating repercussions on the person's health. Diseases related to mood swings are common in alcohol addiction.

Hypomania is one such disease which is caused by alcohol abuse. It is a bipolar disorder which is characterized by mood swings. It is important to understand symptoms of hypomania, as they can be easily ignored.

Hypomania can turn severe if it goes untreated in the early stages. The key symptom of hypomania is the severity of one‘s feelings. For example, a person suffering from hypomania will be extremely happy when he feels good about something or extremely irritated and depressed in an unpleasant situation. The person can suffer from loss of appetite too, a common symptom for most psychological disorders. Hyperactive state is also common. Even with no sleep or rest, the person will not feel fatigued. Fluctuating moods can result in sudden change in attitude, loud and uncontrolled speech, illogical humor, and being interested in many ideas and activities at the same time. The person has little control over his emotions and may not realize he is acting in an abnormal manner.

It is very important for patients to be aware of their abnormal behavior to avoid mishaps like psychological breakdowns. That is why the treatment always involves counseling which makes the person aware of his behavioral problems.
