Should Taxpayers Pay For Alcohol Abuse Treatment?
Today, alcohol addiction is an epidemic and can be found everywhere around us. People addicted to alcohol harm themselves and their families. Their addiction also causes a lot of other social problems like domestic violence. Domestic violence and alcohol addiction tends to be related to each other. Together these social evils wreak havoc in the society. |
To cure alcohol abuse, one needs proper treatment and rehabilitation. In the US, most of the alcohol abuse treatment centers are run by the hospitals and specialized government run centers. These centers are funded by tax payers' money. However, many taxpayers' are against their taxes being used for such treatments and rehabilitations. They feel that the money can be put to better use like improving education or building more community centers.
As a result there seems to be an ongoing debate about who should pay for alcohol abuse treatment. One group feels that it is the society's responsibility to help alcoholics as they can cause problems in the community they live in. So using taxpayers' money is alright as proper treatment will not only help alcoholics but also their families. However, the other group opposes this and feels that alcoholics brought it onto themselves, and therefore, they should fund their own treatment.
This is a very sensitive topic in the US and one cannot give a definite answer whether taxpayers' should pay for alcohol abuse treatment or not. In fact, one needs to look into the problem of alcohol abuse and treatment deeply before deciding either way.
