They start being verbally and physically abusive. Alcoholic men can end up suffering some a disorder known as anti social psychiatric disorder. They get totally cut off from their social circuit. Moreover, they make it hard for their family members to live around and along with them. These situations are certainly hard to live with, and invariably divorce is the only option.
However, it would be advisable for a couple to try and work things out. A divorce not only affects the couple but also the children. It can cause severe emotional trauma in children. Adolescent children especially are not equipped to handle the impact of a divorce and results show that many times they can resort to alcohol to control their emotional pain. Considering the aftermath of divorce, it is best to try everything first to save the marriage. If all fails, then divorce might be the only option.
