Signs Of Drinking Too Much Water
Drinking too much water is medically known as hyponatremia. This occurs when a person drinks too much water causing the low levels of sodium in the blood. Hyponatremia is quite common among sportspeople as they are known to gulp down a lot of water. This is especially true when novices take part in endurance sports as they are unaware of the risk of drinking too much water. |
Usually when a person takes part in a sports event, he is bound to sweat a lot. This can change the sodium level present in the blood as sweating leaches sodium from the body. Normally this happens when a person exercises for long duration of time without replenishing the lost sodium. Hyponatremia is commonly seen in runners who take part in long distance events. Different researches conducted on marathon runners have shown that majority of the runners have low sodium level after the marathon.
Usually the signs of drinking too much water are very similar to the signs of dehydration. However, a person also suffers from nausea, muscle cramps, confusion, disorientation, and slurred speech. When these symptoms occur, a person or athlete thinks he or she is dehydrated and drinks more water. And, this further compounds the problem. If a person suffers from extreme hyponatremia, he will suffer from seizures, coma or worse death.
You can treat hyponatremia by drinking any sports drink that contains sodium. Even eating salty food can alleviate the symptoms. However, if the symptoms are extremely severe, the person would have to seek professional help.
