Education Required For Health Careers
There are many people aspiring to make a career in health care. Though some advanced careers require having a higher degree, some of the careers in medical field can be attained after high school. Such careers do require some additional training and certifications. Though these jobs do not pay as high as the advanced health jobs, one can definitely benefit by working in health care industry due to the job stability, growth in career and a good working environment. Allied Health Careers: These careers require medical professionals other than doctors or nurses who need to have direct contact with patients in clinical setting. Most of these jobs require pursuing an associate degree from a community school, or vocational or technical school. This is a two year program and there are different specifications in this course.
A person should choose the training depending on the desired job position and nature of work.
These courses can be full time or part time. For full time training, one can complete it within two years. But doing it part time, along with a full time job, may require more than two years for completing.
Medical Transcriptionist: Working as a medical transcriptionist requires a 1-year diploma or a 2-year associate degree after completing high school. There are also certification tests which help in becoming a registered medical transcriptionist or a certified medical trancriptionist. Although these are not essential in getting medical transcriptionist jobs but do add weightage to the career.
Medical Interpreter: Working as a medical interpreter requires a minimum of high school diploma. This job does not need a college degree, but many graduates opt for this job after obtaining their degree. This type of job requires a deep know how of medial terminology. They also require fluency in two languages usually English and some other language. During the interviews, they are tested about the language skills and the knowledge of medical terminology.
There are also trainings as well as programs which help in certifying as medical assistants. There are a number of universities which offer such short term courses.
Although getting certified is not a must for the job, but it does help the person gain enough skills to start the career and pass through the interview. These courses are especially useful for people new in the field.
Medical Assistant: If you want to be a medical assistant, you can choose from 2 types of educational programs. You can either go for a one-year certification program or a 2-year associate’s degree from any accredited school. The course content of such programs includes medical terminology, math, science, medical billing, first aid etc.
There are also certification exams to help in becoming a certified medical assistant. The American Association of Medical Assistants offers this course three times a year.
Certification is not a must for medical assistants, but certified medical assistants have better career growth than medical assistants without certifications. The certification requires renewal once in every five years.
Medical Coders: Medical coding or billing requires a high school diploma along with an accredited program in medical coding. Medical coders can achieve certifications like CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or other related certifications through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The courses cost around $1,000 to $2,000.
These classes are offered in classrooms as well as online. Hence, those working as a full time employee can also pursue these courses. The certified medical coding course requires that the individual complete the medical terminology and anatomy course before applying for this course.
There are various other options for health careers, but require a higher degree of education and hard work. Those who want to become doctors and physicians have first work to getting undergraduate degrees and thereafter a medical degree. Obviously, only if you are willing to devote time should you opt for this career path. A medical degree is a 4-year course that can be obtained from a college or a university. Pursuing a medical degree requires a lot of study and hard work.
