This report published annually illustrates an unprejudiced ranking of high schools based on their deliverance of knowledge to the students and the art of equipping children to cope with the oncoming college life. Such reports benefit the parents immensely in terms of evaluating the proficiency of the various schools. Such rankings are also beneficial within the educational fraternity, as they inspire other institutions down the list to raise their reputation in the coming years.
The standards for assessing a high school as the best include three facets. Firstly, stands the accomplishment of its performance levels exceeding the statistical expectations. Second comes the attaining of proficiency rates on state tests for their least advantaged student groups such as black, Hispanic, and economically underprivileged students who have far exceeded state averages. The last aspect includes the standard of preparing its student for college illustrated by student participation and performance in Advanced Placement (AP) exams or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams. While the best high school has been identified as the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in the city of Alexandria, the present ranking demonstrates California at the top of the charts with 110 of its high schools falling in the proficient category. After California was New York with fifty-three schools, Texas with fifty schools, Illinois with thirty-seven schools, Florida with twenty-four schools and Massachusetts with twenty-one schools. Nebraska and Oklahoma could not participate in the scrutiny as they were unable to furnish the required information.
