Developmental Milestones For Preschool
Each day of the child’s life brings in transition in terms of physical growth, movement, use of senses, talking, playing and general interaction. Developmental milestones are benchmarks provided by counselors to assess whether a child is progressing at the regular pace or not. Although the involvement of parents or teachers definitely promotes developmental milestones, it is cardinal to understand that each child progresses at his or her own rate, which should not be compared with any other child. |
The chief areas of development in the initial years of life include cognitive development, gross motor skills development, fine motor skills development, speech and language development and social and emotional development. The first few years are very crucial in child development. Therefore, parents should encourage their children so that they grow up with a positive self esteem.
At the age of 3 years, the child starts showing streaks of independence. The child develops the capability to perform certain clothing rituals on his or her own; can stack 9-10 blocks; draws circles and squares; uses scissors; walks up the steps by alternating the feet; can jump from a step, hop and walk on toes; pedals a tricycle; plays ‘make believe’ games; 3/4 of the speech is comprehensible and vocabulary stretches to the formation of 3 words to 4 words sentences. The child now grasps simple instructions and asks ‘why’ over and over again! Once the child is four years old, he or she will now showcase the ability to dress independently, play board and card games, name at least 4 colors, hop, walk down stairs using alternate feet, sing songs, listen to stories, and speech would be completely comprehensible. At the age of five years, parents can expect their children to carry out routine chores without assistance, follow rules, name colors, and recognize certain letters from the alphabet and print letters.
