Fourth of July is the appropriate day for introducing preschoolers with the importance of a National symbol that is the National Flag of the United States. It can be explained to the children that all countries have their own flags and that as citizens we should be working together in harmony as a team to take our country forward. Templates of the flag can be provided to the children for coloring. Let the children notice and feel that it is rectangular in shape. The facilitator should explain the importance of the national colors; red, white and blue. Let them revise their number counting by counting the 13 stripes and 50 stars.
Help children to color seven stripes as red and six as white. The significance of the 50 stars representing each state, within the blue rectangle should also be well explained. Thereafter, the teacher could take a map and help children in identifying the state in which they reside.
