Preschool Counting Games
The attention span of children during the preschool years is fairly short. Therefore, teaching them a concept requires immense skill on part of the teacher. Since playing comes naturally to children at this age, so teaching through games can help in drilling concepts in a better way. |
Counting numbers is an important part of the preschool curriculum. Instead of the conventional rote learning, if numbers are introducing in a fun way, the entire process becomes easy for the learner and the facilitator. The knowledge of counting can be imparted in an interesting way without the use of any apparatus at all.
To begin with, each time you play any game with the children, do not forget to say the conventional format of commencing a game in terms of “One, Two, Three Go!” Once the initial numbers are grasped by the child, this very method can be taken forward in the form of “One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six Go!” Counting can be reinforced while performing any activity during the course of the day as well such asking the children how many times can they jump and not lose their balance.
The next aspect in numbers is associating the number with the parallel amount. Using aids will come handy in explaining this concept. Before handing over anything or taking it from the children let them count the number such as count and give them 4 sweets one by one. Later on, ask them to return the same amount back to you. Another fun activity could be keeping a number of things in a basket or carton with you that can include 4 apples, 3 toys, 2 pencils and so on. Call one child at a time and ask him or her to take out a specific number of a particular thing from the basket or carton such as 3 apples or 1 toy.
Number recognition is also imperative for preschoolers. For development of this skill, number hunt game is a good option. For this activity, the facilitator will have to place objects with numbers written on them in different nook and corners of the classroom. These objects could be cans, boxes or books. Let the children go around and hunt for the object demonstrating an instructed number.
