What Is Ethical Dilemmas ?
An ethical dilemma usually takes place when we are in a difficult situation that requires us to decide on the ‘morally right’ thing to do. This is always easier said than done, since there is always a thin line between right and wrong, and sometimes that line is just a blur. |
This torments us extensively, especially when confronted with an ‘ethical paradox’. For example, in a civilized society, it has always been advised that should love our neighbors just like we love ourselves. Realistically however, it often leads to an ethical dilemma. When that neighbor is possibly armed, has a criminal record and has threatened to kill you, the right thing to do would probably be to run like hell.
Ethical dilemmas have the nasty habit of tormenting us for days together, since no amount of brain racking can assure us that we are doing the right thing. Even if we do manage to make a decision, there is always the question of whether that decision is in the best interests of all. As humans, our social relationships are complex and cannot be clearly defined, nor can they be ignored. If your neighbor has the desire to kill you, then it probably stems from a serious metal illness. In that case the ethical dilemma could be sorted out by enlisting the support of social groups. The proven way out on any ethical dilemma is by listening to your gut feeling and subsequently doing what makes you feel the most comfortable.
