What-Is-The-Purpose-Of-A-Code-Of-Ethics      Society would have been in complete mayhem if there was no code of ethics to aid decision making, at times when values collide. This is especially true when it comes to the world of business. Today, every business organization acknowledges the fact that ethical standards, fair practices and sound behavior are all equally important in maintaining a company’s reputation, as well as for the sustained growth of an organization. What Is Ethics ?

Ethics are those moral values which dictate how a person or a group should behave in civilized society. Ethics basically tell us how we are supposed to live our lives, as well as the appropriate way in which we should treat others. Ethics, according to philosophy, deals with the organized study of morals and the effects that morality has on human behavior.

This naturally brings us to the question -- what is morality and how do we decide what is good or not? There is another question that follows -- why must we follow the codes of morality?
Ethics are basically codes of conduct that tell us what we ought to do, rather than what is done. Being ethical automatically makes us look good, responsible and even praiseworthy. Lack of ethics attracts guilt, resentment and shame. People usually think of ethics as principles that are used to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong. This is right to some extent, but not quite.

Right ethical principles demand a particular way of thinking, known as ethical reflection, which by nature is extremely complex. For instance, Robert Latimer, the man who killed his daughter, who was gravely disabled, claimed that his act was driven by his love and worry for his daughter. Ethical reflection, in this case, demands that we see beyond Latimer’s actions and understand that his intentions were nothing like that of a cold-blooded murderer. However, the fact remains that he did commit a heinous crime and took the law in his own hands. How do we decide whether Latimer is guilty or not?

Ethical education is a continuous learning process. We keep developing our ethical sense through exposure to real-life experiences, coupled with clear thinking and the ability to make an informed discussion.
