Why Are Ethics Important ?
All of us have our own point of view when it comes to labeling something as right or wrong, or deciding what is ethical and what is not. It is our individual thought processes and what we perceive as good or bad that is responsible for our personal choices and conduct towards others. |
What is most important is that our actions affect other people in ways we cannot even imagine. Everything we do or do not do has a ripple effect, and that means there will always be other people facing the consequences of our words and actions.
The phrase ‘six degrees of separation’ is perhaps most apt when we are discussing this; it is true that sometimes our words or deeds have far-reaching impact which we could not have foreseen, involving people we did know of before. This makes it all the more crucial that we always remain ‘aware’ of what we are saying or doing, and this is what is called being ‘ethical in relationships’.
What exactly would we call being ethical? Ethics are a set of social laws or universally accepted principles to live by, rules that we must apply in all our relationships. An ethical person is one who is good, honest and above board in all dealings with fellow men. Ethics go hand in hand with trust. An ethical person will naturally inspire trust, and we all know that without trust, we cannot build stable and supportive societies or enjoy secure and long-lasting relationships.
