In the past, African American families suffered a lot when they were slaves in the society. The people in the family were separated because of the sale of family members as slaves. However, they still maintained the bond with the family. The slaves, who got their freedom, started working hard to save money to free their family members from the clutches of slavery. |
The people who unfortunately lost their blood relations made up with the fictive kin like cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. However, none of these were blood relations. This practice is taken from ancient African traditions where non-blood relatives were accorded status of family members. It was considered to be an honor. In the African American community, family value means giving a lot of respect to elders, and therefore addressing even strangers with terms that other communities would keep just for close family members.
African American families had to struggle a lot in get united and rebuild their community after they suffered slavery. Around the 1960, nearly seventy-eight percent of the African American families were led by husband and wife. However, over the years, due to education, poverty and reversal in gender roles, more families are being headed by single women. However, even a nuclear family in an African American community can expect financial and emotional support from the extended family. It is common to see older members of the family teaching the younger ones how to behave or passing down information about the religion practiced by the family. Also, family is very important in the African American community. Therefore, older members of the family are always looked after by the younger ones.
