Types Of Parenting Styles
Parenting can be typically divided into 4 broad categories depending on the relationship, openness, frankness and bonding that the parent establishes with the child. |
Types of Parenting Styles:
Authoritarian: In this style, parents often set high expectations on their children. Strict discipline is enforced and the life of the child is totally guided by a set of rules and limits defined by the parent. This style sometimes becomes confusing to the child when the parent keeps changing the expectations at every stage of their growth. Children who are victims of this style tend to be socially withdrawn and can fall a prey to bad company quite easily. They may even rebel with their parents at a later stage and end up doing deeds that the parents may not approve of.
Permissive: The parent-child relationship is quite warm and loving but the expectation of the parent on the child is very low. Rather, parents hardly have any demands on or expectations from the child and end up doing anything to keep the child happy. Such children lack maturity, focus, concentration as well as the competitive spirit. They do not accept responsibility of their actions and tend to blame others for any situations. They lack the necessary independence even in adulthood.
Neglectful: Parents are not involved in the overall development of the child. They provide the basic needs but do not serve as the guiding light in the child’s life. Neglectful parents are unaware of anything about the child, be it interests or even issues related to health.
Authoritative: In this style, children get to know what the exact expectation is at every stage and are constant communication with their parents. The overall confidence and self-esteem of the child is at its best as the relationship is quite open, frank and friendly.
