Parenting Styles In Early Childhood

Several times it has been observed that a child’s psychology is tremendously influenced by many specific actions and emotions of parents. “Parenting style” can be defined as the study on the influence of parents on a child’s social and intellectual competence.

Parenting style involves two fundamental aspects of parenting including parental responsiveness and parental demanding-ness. Parental responsiveness indicates the ability of the parents to recognize their responsibilities towards their child. It includes the extent of fostering child’s individuality, self-regulation, being supportive and complying with the special needs of a child. Parenting demanding-ness includes all the efforts made towards making the child an integral part of the family. These include imparting family values, making him/her understand family relationships, shaping their behavior, imparting discipline, supervising their acts and confronting the child when he/she disobeys. Depending on these two factors, parenting style can be classified into four types such as indulgent, authoritarian, authoritative and uninvolved. Indulgent parents are highly responsive and lenient. Authoritarian parents are highly demanding. Authoritative parents are a balanced mixture of being responsive and demanding depending on the situation. Uninvolved parents are neither responsive nor demanding.

Depending on the parenting style during childhood, the well-being of a child can be predicted. Children growing in an authoritative family background tend to excel in every aspect including academic performance, social competence, intellectual ability and behavior. If the parents are uninvolved, such children respond poorly. Children coming from authoritarian families tend to suffer from depression that gets reflected in their moderate academic performance, poor social skills and low self-confidence levels. If parents are indulgent, those children have higher level of self-esteem and better social skills. However, these children fare poorly in studies due to over confidence and carelessness.
