History Of Single Parent Family
In the last thirty years, there has been significant increase in single parent households in the US. According to the US Census Bureau, in 2002 about 20 million children lived in a household run by single mothers or single fathers. This accounts for over twenty-five percent of all children in the United States. |
The reason for one-parent family has changed from time to time. Historically, single parent families resulted due to death of a spouse. Of late, one-parent families are mostly due to pre-marital births and divorces. From the 1960s through the 1990s, most single parent households were the result of rapid increase in divorce rate in the US. In the early 2002, about 28 percent of all children were living with either single mother or single father.
The most common type of one-parent household is that of a single mother and her blood-related child. In 2002, approximately 23 percent of all children in the US were living with their biological mother. This group included African-Americans, non-Hispanic Caucasians, Asian-Pacific Islander and Latinos.
According to social scientists and experts, the factors attributed to modern-day single parent households in the US changes in the society and culture. In addition, there is a dramatic increase in divorces, increased engagement of women in out-of-door jobs, diminished employment opportunity for men and availability of government funded welfare benefit packages that allow a woman to be independent and bring up their children.
Based on estimates, nearly half of all children in the US born in the last couple of decades will spend a part of their lives with a single mother or single father due to divorce, death or desertion.
