Laws Of Single Parent Adoption

The US has seen a spurt in single parent adoption in the last twenty years. This has been primarily due to more couples divorcing. Also, many homosexuals and lesbians have come out in the open and now want to provide a stable home to children who do not have this privilege. Though most countries encourage adoption by single women, there are some countries which forbid adoption by single and unmarried men.

Usually it is single women who tend to go for adoption. However, this trend is now changing. Even single men are going for single parent adoption. All these single people feel that they are in a state to offer better lives to children who will otherwise spend their entire lives in orphanages and institutions. Adoption agencies are also encouraging unmarried women and men to adopt child.

As most single men and women have a stable job, they are financially secure and have the means to take on the financial responsibility of a child. Also, most of them will have their own homes, thus, they are in a position to offer a stable home to adopted children.

Though every state in US currently allows single parents to adopt children, it is the agencies that have certain rules and regulations for single parent adoptions. Some agencies completely reject applications filed by men who are single, while others put the applications by men who are single on hold and get the prospect parent evaluated by a psychologist. Single and unmarried men have the ignominy of facing an investigation where they are asked personal questions such as their sexual orientation, motive behind the adoption, friend circle, social relationships and family background.

Although single parent adoptions are more common today than they were in the past, the society still believes that for proper development of a child, he or she needs a mother as well as a father. Also, many psychologists are of the opinion that having father and mother is better for a child's mental and physical development.
