Single Parent Statistics

Based on a report released by US Census Bureau toward the end of 2009, the US now has nearly 13.7 million households that are run by single parents. These households are nurturing and bringing up around 21.8 million kids.

Single parent statistics revealed that most single parent families are headed by mothers. The statistics further revealed that in 83.1 percent of the families, women were heads of the family, while in just 16.9 percent, men were family heads.

Further single parent statistics show that single mothers are either living separately out of choice, or they have been deserted by their partners. Approximately 45.9 percent of single mothers are either legally separated from their partners; around 30.5 percent of single mothers have never entered wedlock; and less than 1.7 percent of single mothers are widows.

When it comes to working status of single mothers, the statistics show that 79 percent are employed, 50 percent work on a full time basis, and 29 percent are working on a part time basis. Only 31 percent of these mothers get some kind of financial assistance, and just 6 percent have enrolled themselves in a government welfare program. In contrast, around 54.4 percent of single fathers are separated or divorced, 23.51 percent have re-married, 19.7 percent prefer to live their lives without a new spouse, and less than one percent are widowers.

Many people are under the impression that when it comes to single mothers, they are invariably teenagers. However, based on single parent statistics it can be said that around 37.7 percent of single mothers are actually more than 40 years.
