Single Parents In The Bible

When it comes to mentioning single parents in the Bible, you will find many references. If you check the Bible, usually single parents are taken to be women who have lost their husbands. Hence, these women are called widows in the Bible.

Unlike modern day society where single parent households are formed due to divorce or having children out of wedlock, in biblical times, single parent homes were formed when a spouse passed away. The Bible mentions that children from such households and the single parent are cared for by God, who has great empathy and concern for them.

Also, when looking at the mention of single parents in the Bible, it is important to realize that society at that time was quite different from what know today. In biblical times, there was no concept of birth control. Hence, women who became widows, and single parents as a result had many children and needed all the help they could get from the society and neighbors.

In present day, things are quite different compared to how the parents grieved in the biblical times. For instance, single parents in the Bible would grieve along with the entire community. They would be given support, emotional and financial. However, in today's world, single parents and their children do not visit churches. This is primarily because they are afraid that they will be judged by the congregation. While this is true in some circumstances, not all churches resort to this kind of judgment. Therefore, churches have to take initiatives to bring single parents into their fold and make them feel part of the church setting.
