It has been seen that nearly seventy-nine percent of single women heading a family are employed. When it comes to men, nearly 57 percent of them are separated legally from their partners, and around 90 percent of them work on a full time basis. However, even then statistics on single parents reveal that nearly one-third of all single parent households are below the poverty line; and these one-third get some kind of assistance financially from the government.

Single parent household can occur due to a variety of reasons like loss of a spouse, divorce, break up of a relationship or even desertion by a parent. Bringing up children alone is a big challenge for single parents, be it a man or woman. Single parents have to struggle with day-to-day issues like day care, spending quality time with their children’s, financial hardships, balancing work and house, and above all emotional stress.

Single parents who are women have to work for longer hours in order to make up for the wage disparity that exists in places of employment. This causes more problems for the women as they either have to leave the children unattended at home after school or they have to place them in daycare for longer hours. However, some of these hardships may be reduced by joining support groups which provide emotional support, certain kind of assistance and also renewed hope for single parents.
