Studies On Single Parent Households

According to a study conducted by researchers of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine on households run by single parent, children from these households are at a higher risk of being sexually abused.

Previous studies showed that children brought up in single parent households maintain good health, but are exposed to other kinds of risks. However, some new studies on children living in single parent household are now showing evidence of sexual abuse among these children. This fact is especially true for children from low income single parent households.

The researchers contend that low-income one-parent households are more vulnerable to sexual abuse due to the type of child care facilities available in such households. Besides psychological and emotional disadvantages, children in single parent households show higher absenteeism rates in school, poor academic performance, higher dropout rates and higher rate of juvenile delinquency.

Another study on single parent households reveals that children raised in such homes have a greater tendency to suffer from health problems due to poor living standards and lack of medical insurance. Later on, when these children grow up, they tend to get addicted to illicit drugs and alcohol. However, these problems are not long term, and the children often recover if proper medical attention is given to them.

Many experts believe that the problems prevalent in children raised in one-parent households is primarily because a father figure is absent in the child's life. Also, it was found that these children feel unwanted because more than sixty percent of biological fathers do not bother to go and see their children once they separate from their partners or leave home for good. In addition, if the mothers get a new partner, the person may have a strained and difficult relationship with the children. All these results were revealed through studies on single family households.
