What Is The Difference Between Self Concept And Self Esteem ?
Self concept and self esteem are two terms in psychology that mean the same and are used one for the other. There are subtle differences in these terms that one needs to understand for a proper psychological evaluation of the person. |
Self concept is knowledge of self. There are people in this world who do know what they are. They may have several great qualities but they do not understand it in themselves and do not put into right use. They do not know if they have good or bad qualities, and will not realize if they have a temper or if they need to change something about themselves. Self concept is important for everyone or else, they will fall prey to flattery and other unwanted traps. For example, if you are rich and do not have self concept, then others can easily take advantage of you. Every person should be able to reflect on their qualities and this is called self concept.
Self esteem is a feeling of self worth that is born out of confidence. Every person should have self esteem to have an image about themselves. They will not make mistakes when they have self esteem because they want to maintain a certain image in others eyes. Whereas people without self esteem do not have an image of their own and they think that they are worthless. They are ashamed about themselves and so behave inappropriately due to that.
Lack of self concept is just about knowing yourself, but lack of self esteem is not respecting yourself and completely having disregard for yourself.
