How Many People Die From Smoking Each Year ?

Although there are many awareness programs and campaigns to educate people about the ill-effects and dangers of smoking, this is one addiction that seems to be constantly growing around the world. In certain developing countries, even children are known to smoke as they can get easy access to cigarettes.

Most youngsters, who smoke consider, it a stylish or trendy habit without realizing that by the time they reach adulthood, they will be addicted to smoking. In addition, they may have a host of health problems brought on by their smoking habit. It can also be said that many of these youngsters do not know the facts and figures about smoking deaths.

It is estimated that tobacco contained in cigarettes causes 5.4 million deaths each year around the word. By 2015, it is estimated that 6.5 million people will die on account of smoking, and this figure is only going to grow as the years go by. By 2030, smoking will cause 8.3 million deaths worldwide. According to a report by the World Health Organization, every 6.5 seconds, a smoker or an ex-smoker dies due to smoking-related diseases or health problems.

In the United States, it is estimated that around 443,000 people die each year because of smoking, and an additional 50,000 die due illnesses and diseases brought on by passive smoking, or inhalation of second hand cigarette smoke. In China where practically everyone smokes, around 1.2 million people die due to this addiction each year. This figure works out to a whopping 2,000 deaths a day.
