Why Does Smoking Cause A Rise In Blood Pressure?

Cigarettes contain many harmful chemical compounds that can wreak havoc in the body. The most threatened organs in the body on account of cigarette smoking are the heart and lungs. These are the two organs that are affected first.

When a person smokes, blood vessels in the body get constricted. This primarily is because of the presence of certain chemical compounds present in cigarette. In fact, cigarette smoking is known to cause arthrosclerosis, or thickening of blood vessels, which is one of the major causes of high blood pressure. When the blood vessels in the body are constricted, the heart has to work harder to ensure that oxygen and nutrients reach all parts of the body. This causes the heart to pump harder, which eventually causes a rise in blood pressure. This by itself may not seem a big deal but remember, high blood pressure increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and strokes which can be fatal.

You need to remember that every puff of a cigarette that you take will have an adverse effect on your body. Not only will your blood pressure rise, there will be hordes of other health related problems that you will suffer from as you continue smoking. You may end with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, atherosclerosis, damaged neurons in the brain and many more. The bottom line is that you should actually pay attention to the warning mentioned on a cigarette pack. The warning clearly states that smoking is injurious to health. And, it definitely is.
